Credit cards can create bad debt for some people, while they help other people out of potentially sticky situations. Of course what you use your credit card for and when you use it depends entirely on your own circumstances.

If you do apply for a credit card or you already have one, there are a few things that you need to know and to look out for.

You need to be looking at your credit cards terms and conditions, otherwise known as the small print! If you see that you are paying an annual fee, look for one that doesn’t charge you an extra fee to use the card. Unless your credit card offers you something that outweighs the fee, (and they rarely do), then it is worthwhile to switch cards.

You next need to be looking at your credit card bill. If you pay back the full amount of balance every month then you are not paying any interest. However, if you are one of the many millions of people that pay only a minimum amount off each month, then you will be paying some form of interest. Look to see what your interest is. Can you find a credit card with a better deal? If so, switch to a new credit card and start paying less for your interest. If you can, pay off as much as you can from your monthly balance and you will less interest over time.

Look for special offers and cash back that are available on many credit cards today. Lots of companies are jumping on the bandwagon and offering customers a reason to use their credit card. IF you use a credit card and you have one with cash back entitlements, then you get some money back every time you shop, wherever you shop. So you could think of it like a voucher!

Credit card can both put you in and get you out of debt. You need to be a savvy consumer when choosing your card
